Funding the Equal Pay Challenge

Back to all Motions

Conference continues to believe that a principle priority for UNISON is combating pay inequalities and securing equal pay for work of equal value for all our members, in properly evaluated and negotiated framework agreements. Conference notes that establishing equal pay for our members was one of the founding principles of the union.

Conference recognises that UNISON faces potential extensive litigation to secure members’ legal rights, and to defend the union against legal attacks at all levels. Conference believes that in facing these challenges, which it is determined to win, sufficient resources must be made available.

Conference notes the passing of motion 116 last year and its subsequent implementation on funding the equal pay challenge. It also notes that the financial statements contain details of expenditure to date on fighting equal pay and the balance of the fund as at the end of last year of £5.4 million held in the dedicated fund created as part of the motion.

The reports on equal pay in both the financial statements and annual report disclose that costs continue to accumulate. It is anticipated that costs over the next few years are likely to exceed the current plans to raise money.

Thus the National Executive Council believes a review of the arrangements for funding equal pay should be undertaken including consultation with branches and regions prior to the 2010 delegate conference.

Conference therefore calls on the National Executive Council to:

1)Continue to implement the arrangements introduced under motion 116 passed at the 2008 delegate conference;

2)Review arrangements for funding of equal pay to include consultation with regions and branches;

3)To bring any proposed changes to the funding of equal pay to 2010 delegate conference for approval.
