Conference
2008 National Women's Conference
Date
22 October 2007
Decision
Carried

Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to work with all relevant bodies to push for further initiatives in pension provision for low earners and those not in permanent employment.

Conference welcomes the announcement in the Queen’s speech that new legislation is to be introduced aimed at encouraging employers to provide good quality pensions for all employees, can call son the National Women’s’ Committee to campaign to ensure that these measures particularly benefit women. Whilst recent changes such as automatic NHS credits for child rearing and caring as well as being able to ‘buy back pension years’ will help many women out of the poverty trap and are most welcome, the new proposed personal accounts will not benefit all. Those who earn less than £6000 per annum or have several part time jobs- mainly women, will not be eligible to join nor will agency workers and those on short-term or self-employed contracts.
