London’s square mile is one of the most economically prosperous areas in the world. But behind that success lies a hidden story of disadvantage and discrimination affecting women at all levels – a story which is replicated in cities all across the UK, both in the public and private sector.

Prejudice about women’s abilities and roles and the undervaluing of work traditionally done by women leads to them being paid less, overlooked for promotion and being subject to harassment and discrimination.

Lack of flexible work, particularly at senior levels, and the long hours culture has a disproportionate affect on women, who still carry the bulk of caring responsibilities at home.

The Fawcett Society is launching a new campaign for 2008 calling for action to stamp out sexism in the city.

Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to join with Fawcett in their campaign for :

1)Flexible work for all

2)A living wage for all

3)Full valuation of traditional women’s work

4)An end to the long working hours culture

5)An end to occupational segregation

6)More flexible and affordable childcare

7)An end to pregnancy discrimination

8)An end to the exploitation of women through the sex industry

9)An end to sexual harassment
