Conference believes that the huge increase in the Nurses and Midwifery Council registration is unacceptable.

The NMC can not justify nor demonstrate such a huge increase, nor do we as registrants have confidence that we are receiving value for money. All too often when the NMC are contacted by registered nurses who raise concerns regarding patient safety due to insufficient staffing levels the NMC are powerless to intervene on our behalf.

The percentage increase of 400% the NMC feel is justifiable in comparison to nurses pay increase of under 11% for the same time frame is obscene. This is the second significant hike in fees in recent years and the previous increase has already seen our members struggle to raise the additional money to meet these exorbitant registration fees causing financial hardship due to registration being paid as a lump sum.

Moreover conference believes that health care professionals who are required to register to practice should we believe have their registration fees paid for by the employer who benefits from the security of the nursing register. Nurses themselves are paying the price of the employer ensuring public safety. Many members work part time; however there has been no pro-rata provision made for registration fees.

Conference calls on Service Group Executive to continue to raise these issues at every level using all its might to reverse this position and report back to health conference 2008 on its progress.
