Conference notes that far from being the best ever year the last 12 months have been one of the worst for the NHS and its workforce. We have seen Trust after Trust facing a financial crisis whilst at the same time more public money than ever is pouring into the private health sector. It is increasingly clear that we are facing a department of health which views the private sector as central to the future of the NHS.

As Britain’s biggest union, and the biggest union in the health service we have the lead role to play in defending the NHS at this difficult time.

We have therefore led the way with the successful national campaign “Keep the NHS Working” and are working alongside many other health unions for the first time in “NHS Together”. We have organised lobbies, demonstrations, petitions and organised a national strike against the privatisation of NHS Logistics.

There is however still much work to be done.

Many of the problems our NHS faces are at a local level. In many areas we need to improve our organisation, structures, activity and involvement of members if we are to campaign successfully against the cuts and privatisation.

Conference therefore agrees to make it a priority in the coming months to ensure that branches have the capacity to;

Involve members in campaigns and consultation.

Produce regular high quality information to members.

Recruit and train new representatives and contacts.

Recruit new members.

Conference believes that resources should be redirected to this work, and to the NHS Together/Keep the NHS Working campaigns, from other work if necessary.
