HEALTH CARE ASSISTANTS REGISTRATION AND TRAINING

Back to all Motions

Conference
2007 Health Care Service Group Conference
Date
29 December 2006
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference notes UNISON’s campaign for Healthcare Assistants to be regulated, and the outcome of our consultation identified their wish to be regulated by the Health Professions Council.

However, Conference also notes with strong concern that training for HCAs has been cut back in many areas as a result of the financial crisis, caused by the government’s obsession with turning the NHS into profitable business.

Conference commits the union to campaign for a higher priority to be given to the defence and improvement of training for HCAs and all NHS Staff, as part of the campaign against health service cutbacks. This should include recruitment and information material which highlights UNISON’s leading role in supporting training and building support for Union Learning Reps as champions of quality training.

Conference also notes that the high cost of registration will be a particular burden for low-paid staff such as HCAs, and resolves to campaign for the cost of registration to be borne by employers.
