Chemicals and Breast Cancer Prevention

Conference
2006 National Women's Conference
Date
27 October 2005
Decision
Carried

Conference congratulates the National Women’s Committee for its joint campaign with the Women’s Environmental Network for breast cancer month last year called the big see. The campaign raised awareness amongst many of our women members about the links between some toxic chemicals in everyday use and the rising incidence of breast cancer. Many hundreds of women lobbied their MEP as part of the campaign for strong and effective legislation, REACH, to control chemical use throughout Europe.

Conference now calls on the National Women’s Committee to:

1)report to women members the outcome of the REACH debate in the European Parliament;

2)review the effectiveness of the big see campaign and on the basis of these,

3)decide what further action should be taken to ensure that primary prevention is prioritised in the national cancer plan and that women’s health is protected from exposure to carcinogenic and hormone disrupting chemicals.
