The National Pensioners Convention

Back to all Motions

Conference
2006 Retired Members' Conference
Date
16 June 2006
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference regrets that:

1)Lord Turner and the Pensions Commission have made no recommendations to improve the basic state pension until 2010:

2)the Government White Paper has no plans to increase immediately the basic state pension which represents at least half of many pensioners’ weekly income.

Conference believes that improving the basic state pension and paying it equally to all retired men and women without delay is of extreme importance, not only to existing pensioners who are struggling to make ends meet, but to all those at work because any future improvements can only build upon today’s levels.

Conference therefore calls on the National Executive Council to commit itself to supporting the National Pensioners’ Convention (NPC) in its campaign to substantially raise the basic state pension and restore its link to earnings by:

a)encouraging all branches and regional organisations of the union to affiliate to the NPC and get involved in its activities;

b)inviting the NPC to have an exhibition stand at the next national retired members’ conference;

c)inviting a NPC speaker to address the next national retired members’ conference;

d)circulating bulk copies of the NPC’s quarterly newspaper;

e)promoting the NPC and its activities within the union’s journal and other publications;

f)raising £1 a year from each member towards funding the NPC’s national campaign.
