Short Term Funding

Back to all Motions

Conference
Police Staff Service Group Conference 2006
Date
14 July 2006
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference notes with increasing concern and alarm that the Service Group Executive has failed to implement any of the motions raised on this issue in 2004 (motions 11 and 27) and 2005 (motion 20) on short term funding particularly with regard to Police Community Support officers (PCSOs).

Government funding for PCSOs, Custody Officers and Volume Crime Scene Investigators employed by many Police Forces across the country will shortly come to an end. As an example, some forces have indicated that they may not be able to maintain levels of PCSOs they currently employ when this funding expires. Many of our members will then find themselves in a redundancy situation.

Conference instructs the Service Group Executive to:

1)hold urgent talks with the Home Office to seek to secure permanent Government funding for PCSOs, (taking due account of the significant increase in their numbers), Custody Officers and Volume Crime Scene Investigators;

2)make representations to ACPO, Home Office to resist short-term fixes and put pressure on Government to provide long term funding for initiatives that become permanent;

3)in partnership with the APF/GPF campaign to secure permanent funding for these vital roles.
