Health and Safety

Back to all Motions

Conference
2006 National Delegate Conference
Date
24 February 2006
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference reaffirms its commitment to health, safety and welfare in the workplace as a cornerstone of UNISON and recognises that time and again members put health and safety at the top of their agenda and that health and safety is one of the main union recruitment tools, with 70 per cent of new members considering that health and safety is a very important issue and more important than pay (TUC briefing “The Union Effect”).

Conference also recognises that many UNISON branches continue to struggle to identify and train enough health and safety representatives to carry out effective monitoring of management health, safety and welfare responsibilities and to fully carry out their rights and duties under the Safety Representatives and Safety Committee Regulations 1977 and the Health and Safety Consultation with Employees Regulations 1996.

Furthermore, Conference recognises that despite UNISON’s commitment to health and safety, few health and safety motions are prioritised and therefore discussed at conference.

Conference therefore instructs the National Executive Council to organise an annual national UNISON health and safety seminar, with delegates to be funded by branches, to discuss health and safety and to develop a national strategy to address the above issues.
