Mileage Allowances

Conference
2006 Health Care Service Group Conference
Date
25 April 2006
Decision
Carried

This Conference is extremely concerned that there appears to be no effective or responsive mechanism in place to recompense NHS staff for the petrol they use whilst on official business. This is particularly true for staff who are using their own cars for work purposes. Many employers insist that staff are entitled only to claim the Public Transport rate of mileage when undertaking learning opportunities and mandatory training. This has led to staff feeling that they are, in effect, subsidising the NHS whilst driving.

We therefore request that the Health Group Executive treat this issue as a matter of priority within the NHS Staff Council to provide a national scheme that can accurately reflect the true cost of petrol, and relevant guidance to branches to ensure that members are able to claim the standard rate of mileage as a minimum.
