Conference
2006 National Black Members' Conference
Date
19 September 2005
Decision
Carried

We all know that we need to increase black member recruitment, retention and development into activists, but we are hindered by the quality and accuracy of data that the branches, regions and employer provide to the regional and branch black member sog structures.

Therefore Conference calls upon the NBMC to work with the NEC to encourage all branches and regional structures to use the Data Protection Act to perform the following actions:-

1.Issue to all existing members the new membership application forms which provide details as to ethnicity (lilac coloured forms)

2.All branches and regional offices to re-cycle and take out of circulation the previously used application forms.

3.Send out annually data checking sheets to home addresses requesting confirmation as to accuracy of the data held on the branch/regional membership services database/mailing lists.

4.Encourage branches to use the data received to set up branch black member mailing lists to communicate directly with its black members.

5.Ensure that data received is used to develop a strategy to increase black member participation as part of the branch development plan.

6.Branches to use the data to assist with the make up of branch delegations to National Conference.

This needs to be a priority for our union if it is committed to improving black members participation and this motion will facilitate the actions of any regional operational plan regarding race and the development of black members
