A Woman’s Right to Choose

Conference
2005 National Women's Conference
Date
20 October 2004
Decision
Carried

Conferences notes with concern the current interest in reviewing the law to reduce the time limits for abortions.

The decision to have an abortion is a complex one, involving a range of personal, emotional, social and economical considerations. Conference does not believe that any review on the time limits for abortion should be purely based on new scientific research.

The view that pregnancy termination is easily available at present is false. Women have to satisfy two doctors that they should have a termination, before the 24 week time limit, which is already restrictive on a woman’s right to choose.

Conference calls upon the National Women’s Committee to work with the MPs and other politicians from the devolved UK Parliaments to re-assert its support of a woman’s right to choose, and urge the UK government not to restrict further a woman’s right to access abortion.
