Conference
Lesbian,Gay,Bisexual & Transgender Conference 2005
Date
29 July 2005
Decision
Carried

Conference recalls the resolution of the Twelfth National Lesbian and Gay Conference deploring homophobic violence in Jamaica and supporting the work of the Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-sexuals and Gays (JFLAG).

Conference welcomes this self-organised group’s continuing work on this issue and that of others and it urges branch and regional Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Groups to include material and political support for JFLAG in their work programmes for 2006.

However, Conference notes that:

1.With the end of the Amnesty International postcard campaign, there is a lack of material; and,

2.This work has been portrayed, mendaciously, as anti-Jamaican and therefore racist. Conference is concerned that, handled badly, it may put UNISON members of Jamaican heritage in invidious positions or strain relations between UNISON and sister unions in Jamaica.

Conference therefore instructs the National LGBT Committee, following appropriate consultation to:

A.Produce campaign material; and,

B.Issue guidelines for this work.
