This Conference welcomes the findings of the Scottish Executive’s report “When the Customer isn’t right” and the funding of a 3-year campaign to cut the number of assaults to public service workers. This campaign is the package of non-legislative measures, which support the Emergency Workers Bill currently being debated in the Scottish Parliament. This work is the result of a partnership between the Scottish Executive, the trade unions in Scotland and various employer’s organisations.

As a part of the campaign market research was carried out amongst groups of public service workers and members of the general public. The findings of this research show that reception staff in Health Centres and GP practices are particularly at risk of verbal abuse. More worryingly the research gave the impression that most people felt that it was acceptable to abuse these workers.

This Conference recognises that these groups of staff are predominantly women.

Conference re-enforces the view that it is unacceptable to be abusive to any worker, regardless of the job that they have.

Conference calls on the SGE work with the National Labour Link Committee to campaign for a similar package of non-legislative measures to partner any piece of legislation going through the Westminster parliament.
