35 Hour Working Week

Conference
2005 Health Care Service Group Conference
Date
22 December 2004
Decision
Carried

Conference reaffirms its commitment to a 35 hour week. It notes that the main reason for Agenda for Change terms being 37 ½ hours is due to the shortage of nurses. As a consequence of this the agency bill for the NHS is outrageously enormous. Conference accepts that the Government has made some progress in increasing the number of nurses in training. Conference resolves however that this is clearly insufficient and must be increased on regular planned basis. In line with this Conference calls upon the Health Service Executive to have a planned campaign to reduce the working week to 35 hours in 5 half hour stages over the next 5 years.
