Recovery of Council Tax Arrears from the Elderly

Back to all Motions

Conference
2004 Retired Members' Conference
Date
12 October 2004
Decision
Carried

Conference expresses its concern at the proposals recently suggested by Coventry city and no doubt under consideration by other councils, to take steps to reduce the current council tax arrears, especially with regard to the draconian proposals for dealing with debt involving the elderly.

These proposals including increases in the taking of bankruptcy proceedings, forcing the immediate selling of a property, taking out legal charges on the homes and/or the recovery of arrears from a dead person’s estate are being considered as an appropriate way to deal with debts built up by elderly people, who fail to pay but have capital in their homes.

Such proposals are intimidatory and exhibit discrimination against elderly homeowners.

Conference calls upon the National Retired Members’ Committee to make strong representations to the appropriate bodies for them to oppose such proposals.
