Conference calls upon the National Executive Council to take appropriate steps to ensure that the government addresses the issue of the erosion of pensioners’ increases by the high annual increase to such charges as council tax and public utilities.
Conference also notes that UNISON has established a council tax working group to establish clear UNISON policy towards the issue of council tax and funding of local public services.
Therefore, Conference requests that the National Retired Members’ Committee make efforts to secure retired member input into the UNISON council tax working group.
Unless such annual increases are pegged to the rate of inflation many more senior citizens will be caught in the poverty trap.
