Racism in UNISON

Back to all Motions

Conference
2004 National Black Members' Conference
Date
31 October 2003
Decision
Carried

Conference believes all UNISON branches must have clear and transparent policies on equal opportunity and self-organisation groups firmly written into their branch rules.

1)National Black Members’ Committee (NBMC) and National Executive Council (NEC) to endorse the above recommendations with a growing need to tackle racial discrimination or any other form of discrimination within UNISON.

2)To ensure branch secretaries actively encourage wider participation of its membership and place race/equality on their branch agenda. Support and resource self organise groups allowing black members to express their voice of concerns, giving them a right to bargain and help implement issues as the Race Relation (Amendment) Act and Stephen Lawrence Inquiry states within the workplace.

3)The NBMC and NEC to develop strategies and policies to remove racism and racists from branches where there is evidence to warrant such action.

We see and hear so much said about the BNP rearing its ugly head, and UNISON higher ranks calling its membership, but highlighting the black membership to fight against racism and fascism, but yet in our branch many black members are disillusioned with the everyday fight against our branch that unfairly restricts the progression of SOG and continues to find it a uphill battle to maintain their dignity under adverse treatment that does not comply to the aims and value of our union.
