Conference
2003 National Delegate Conference
Date
17 February 2003
Decision
Carried

Conference recognises that an effective global strategy on sustainable development is crucial for the long term well-being of the planet. Such a strategy has to be embraced by all global participants including the richest and most powerful.

Conference is proud of UNISON’s record on campaigning for sustainable development and our reputation which has put us at the forefront of the debate.

Conference welcomes UNISON’s particular contribution to the campaigns on energy efficiency, fuel poverty, alternative transport policies and water aid and calls for work in these areas to continue to be developed.

Conference welcomes the commitments made at the World Summit held in Johannesburg in 2002 and calls on the Government to continue to press for improvements in future forums.

Conference resolves to take this work forward by:

1)continuing to lobby the Government to press for further improvements to the World Summit commitments;

2)working with other unions and voluntary organisations to maintain a high profile for sustainable development policies;

3)working with the Young Members’ Forum to develop a youth campaign around sustainability of the planet;

4)developing a public service strategy for local implementation which builds on the global themes.
