Conference notes with concern that politician and media references to public services tend to be limited to nurses and teachers or in this last year fire-fighters.
UNISON’s largest service group, those who work in local government, have a wide diversity of jobs, but are rarely mentioned. Conference believes that imbalance of awareness needs to be addressed.
Conference calls on the Service Group Executive to instigate a publicity campaign using advertising or other suitable means to try to redress this imbalance and promote awareness of the importance and diversity of local services provided by local government workers.
We also call on Dave Prentis and other prominent UNISON figures to try to widen general awareness of the diversity of public services whenever they have the opportunity to do so.
