Conference
2003 Local Government Service Group Conference
Date
20 February 2003
Decision
Carried as Amended

Conference welcomes UNISON’s continuing commitment to achieving equal pay and is pleased to note that the campaign continues to be a priority area for the Local Government Service Group.

Conference also notes the establishment of the Local Government Pay Commission and welcomes its role in addressing the long term problem of equal pay within Local Government.

Conference also welcomes the announcement of further government funding for the TUC Equal Pay Pilot, enabling it to continue for a further year, and to train more equal pay representatives. Conference notes that the purpose of this training programme is to equip union representatives to approach management to carry out equal pay audits and to develop action plans to tackle any pay discrimination that is revealed.

Conference also notes that pay discrimination occurs on grounds of race, disability and part time status as well as sex, and that equal pay audits need to address these issues.

Conference calls on the Local Government Executive to:

1)Encourage branches to identify information which can be used to provide evidence to the Local Government Pay Commission to highlight areas such as unequal pay and unfair treatment of part time workers

2)Encourage branches to send representatives on the equal pay training

3)Ensure that pay audits also audit for race, disability and part time status

4)Ensure that branches that represent FE members encourage members in colleges to stand as equal pay representatives
