About this job

UNISON is the UK’s largest trade union with over 1.3 million members. Our members are people working in the public services, for private contractors providing public services and essential utilities.

High inflation and rocketing energy bills mean most public service workers are worried how they are going to afford to feed their family and heat their home in the weeks ahead. UNISON is campaigning for real terms pay rises for all public service workers.

The successful candidate will support our organising projects, focusing on growing our membership and building organisation, across the east midlands region. In addition to signing new members up for union membership, you will help motivate them to take an active role in our campaigns. This role will require travel across the East Midlands as the organisers will be visiting workplaces to further our objectives.

The successful candidate will bring their experience and skills in one-to-one communications, recruitment, organising and campaigning. Previous experience as a recruiter, organiser and campaigner within a trade union or community organisation would also be desirable.  You will also need to demonstrate knowledge of trade unionism and our union’s values.

The successful candidate will need to be flexible with their working hours. Reaching members can be challenging during “office hours” so the successful candidate may be required to work in the evening, early mornings and occasionally at weekends.

Our projects open great opportunities for existing members and activists who think they’ve got what it takes to work in a dynamic team, helping to recruit new members, identify and develop the next generation of activists and a build a network of union ambassadors advocating and representing members.  If this is you, or someone you know, we would like to support that interest.

We are doing an online ‘familiarisation’ session where we will talk more about the role, what you can expect working as an organiser for UNISON, and the process of applying, with some helpful hints and tips along the way.  The session will be held on Tuesday, 21 May 2024 starting at 6:30 pm lasting no more than an hour. If you, or someone you know, would like to come along, please dial in via Microsoft Teams using the following link.
