About this job

This assistant national officer post would be part of a team of equalities specialists in head office, called the Membership Participation Unit (MPU). It works directly with six UK wide committees of UNISON members: for Black members; disabled members; lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members; retired members; women members and young members. These committees work in partnership with other parts of the union to identify and promote our equality agenda. MPU officers also advise other UNISON committees, including the National Executive Council and national negotiating bodies, on equalities issues. As a strategic centre, we provide the necessary guidance and tools for our branches and regions to promote equality and tackle discrimination in the workplace, including campaigning at local and national levels.

They will be able to assist in providing specialist equality advice on issues, campaigns and legislation to a range of audiences. They will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of committees and forums and will draft papers for committees, which may involve some UK travel. Whilst the assistant national officer role is generic, this post will be primarily working with our National Disabled Members Committee and national officer for disabilities

They will assist in developing policy, advice and guidance to branches and relevant Committees on a range of issues linking these activities to the recruitment and organisation for members and their representatives.
