Conference condemns the remarks of Shadow Home Secretary Christopher Grayling on the future of PCSOs under a Conservative Government. In an interview given to the Yorkshire Post, published on 5 May 2009, Mr Grayling said:
“Doing away with PCSOs is something I’m looking at the moment. I’m minded to say that decisions about their futures should be taken locally, but its not something I’ve reached a settled view on yet.
The Conservative Shadow Home Secretary went on to say that he plans to instigate a review of the role of PCSOs, and that deleting the role could be a possibility.
Conference believes that Mr Grayling’s remarks about PCSOs are offensive, and calculated to raise fears amongst UNISON PCSO members, and their families, about their future job security. Conference further believes that the Shadow Home Secretary’s views show a lack of understanding about the economics of policing in the 21 century.
Conference calls upon the Service Group Executive to continue to :
1)Publicise the potential Conservative attack on PCSOs widely to members and branches
2)Make all necessary representations to the Conservative Party in defence of the role of PCSOs
