Conference agrees that the concept of free bus travel for disabled people and those aged 60 and above has been a welcome advance for many citizens within the United Kingdom.
However, we are concerned that some local authorities issue travel vouchers instead of an open permit for free travel. Vouchers, by their nature, ration the amount of free travel that a voucher holder can undertake in any financial year, and are a great disadvantage for disabled people living in rural areas.
Conference agrees that all local authorities should, in future, issue permits for free travel instead of travel vouchers to ensure that arrangements that are available in England are made available throughout all parts of the UK.
The National Disabled Members’ Conference call upon the National Disabled Members Committee to bring this proposal to the attention of the Disabled Passengers Advisory Committee, Organisations of Disabled People and other Disability interest groups for joint campaigning on this issue.
