Why the living wage matters: Gail Wilby

This is Living Wage Week, and UNISON is campaigning for a living wage for all its members

Gail Wilby is a cleaner at Cardiff Council.

Gail Wilby has worked for the council for 22 years – for the last 16 of them as a cleaner. She is a ‘part-time’ worker who clocks 37 hours a week as her family’s sole breadwinner.

While she was still waiting for her first living wage pay slip to reveal the extent of her gain, she welcomed the move.

“At the end of the day, every little helps – especially with bills like gas, petrol, food, which have got tougher over the past two years.

“Money is being stretched like an elastic band. You are always paddling to stay afloat.”
