UNISON is the biggest union in the East Midlands, with more than 100,000 members across the region.
Our members are people working in public services or for private contractors providing public services and essential utilities.
They include frontline staff and managers working full- or part-time in local authorities, the NHS, colleges and schools, universities, the electricity, gas and water industries, police services, transport and in the voluntary sector.
Members are organised into 77 branches across the region.
Our priority is to build strong workplace organisation that listens to and engages with members on the things that matter to them – whether that is job security, pensions or defending services from cuts or the threat of privatisation.
In the East Midlands region, we have members in all of UNISON’s sectors. The biggest numbers of members are in health and local government.
The work that reps do in recruiting, organising and supporting members is key to the strength of UNISON. This section explains the role and responsibilities of branch stewards, health and safety representatives and learning representatives.
The organisational structure of the region is made up of a regional council, regional committee, regional convenor and regional staff.
As a democratic union, all members have a right to take part in making the decisions which define what work we do, our campaigns and priorities. This includes voting to elect branch officers and deciding who sit on the regional council and regional committee.
Every member of UNISON belongs to a branch. Your branch is the main place where you can get help and advice and take part in the democracy of the union.
UNISON members who share common concerns come together in self-organised groups to discuss, campaign and organise events around the specific issues that affect them. UNISON’s self-organised groups are for black members, women, young members, retired members, disabled members and LGBT members.
