Responding to the report released today (Monday) by the Justice Select Committee, which says the introduction of employment tribunal fees has reduced ordinary people’s chances of getting justice, UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said:
“Over the last three years tribunal fees have prevented many people who have been wronged at work from taking their employers to court.
“Unscrupulous bosses can hardly believe their luck. They can pretty much treat their staff as badly as they choose, safe in the knowledge they are never likely to be taken to a tribunal
“Fees of up to £1,200 have hit hardest those who can least afford it, and that is not right, nor is it fair.
“Hopefully the government will take this report seriously and get rid of fees altogether. Only then can wronged employees have any hope of their case being heard and getting the justice they deserve.”

- UNISON also welcomes the report recommendation that the three month time limit for women complaining of maternity or pregnancy discrimination should be reviewed.

- Fees start at around £160 to issue a type A claim (e.g. unlawful deduction of wages or breach of contract) and £250 for a type B claim (e.g. unfair dismissal, discrimination claims), with a further hearing fee of £230 for Type A claims and £950 for Type B claims.
