Commenting on the pledge given today (Wednesday) at Prime Minister’s Questions that free school meals for infants won’t be scrapped, UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis said: “We welcome the Prime Minister’s assurances that vital free school meals are to be spared the axe, especially as they ensure young children get at least one hot meal a day.
“Parents who are in line to see their tax credits slashed by the government will have some relief at the news, but the Prime Minister has made promises before. He said he wouldn’t cut tax credits or scrap the much-missed educational maintenance allowance, so many mums and dads would be right to be sceptical.
“Working families need certainty over their family budgets, especially when money is tight, as it continues to be, and will hope this latest assurance is a promise David Cameron actually gets to keep.”
