Reverse the Tory attack on essential protections

This week, Labour leader Ed Miliband took up the cudgels on behalf of working people by tabling an Early Day Motion calling for the annulment of new laws that threaten their rights.
This is a key issue for UNISON and something we have been calling for. It is exactly the type of support that our members and activists need.

Earlier this year, the government weakened the protection that workers have when they are transferred between employers.

This legislation – known as TUPE – is vital for protecting terms and conditions. Parental leave, flexible working and time off for ante-natal appointments are just some of the conditions under threat.

The government has made it easier for employers to cut terms and conditions and ignore collective agreements with trade unions.

The changes make it quicker and easier for employers to make workers redundant, and to move people’s jobs further away from their homes.

Low paid workers are more likely to have their jobs outsourced. And once this happens, it will become all too easy for employers to gradually erode terms and conditions.

This government’s obsession with outsourcing public services is fuelling a race to the bottom. It is essential that workers have protection when they are transferred.

These draconian laws that allow bad employers to ride roughshod over staff, have no place in our society. It shows the difference between the values of the Labour Party, and those of the Tories who do not care about working people.

It would be great if all Labour Party MPs supported the Early Day Motion opposing the government changes and if Labour includes it as a manifesto pledge for the general election.

Lobby your MP about this Early Day Motion and support Labour in standing up for working people.
