A big thank you to all who supported the strike on 10 July. It was a great show of solidarity and determination from members battling for fair pay. Let’s keep up the fight until we get a decent result.
We had a bit of good news from Europe at the end of last week – that our National Health Service would be excluded from a proposed trade deal with the US. But, campaigning on this issue has to continue until we get all public services excluded from the proposed Trans Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). Read the UNISON briefing on TTIP
The TTIP poses real dangers to our public services. It doesn’t just remove trade tariffs, but opens up markets in the service sectors, including health (until last week), education and social services.
And it would allow multinational companies providing public services to sue the UK government in secretive trade tribunals with no right of appeal, if their contracts were threatened.
These talks, that would erode the government’s ability to act in the public interest, have taken place behind closed doors. So we must continue to campaign against them to protect our precious public services from attack.
Our campaigning should highlight the dangers of this treaty. We all know the abysmal record of this Tory-led government on putting markets, rather than citizens, at the hear tof public services. The fight has to go on.
