The UK’s biggest union UNISON will hold four major conferences in Liverpool from Sunday 11 to Friday 16 June.
Hundreds of delegates will attend to take part in debates and hear keynote speakers including the union’s general secretary Christina McAnea. Other guests include deputy leader of the Labour Party Angela Rayner, shadow minister for mental health Rosena Allin-Khan, shadow levelling up, housing and communities secretary Lisa Nandy and former England footballer John Barnes.
Over the course of the six days, the venue hosts UNISON’s local government conference (Sunday and Monday), water, environment and transport conference (Monday), energy conference (Monday) and national conference (Tuesday to Friday).
The event will close with the award of honorary UNISON membership to campaigners Dr Neville and Baroness Doreen Lawrence, the parents of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence. Neville Lawrence will be in attendance.
Lisa Nandy will give a keynote address on the opening day of the local government conference as well as presenting awards to the winners of this years UNISON local service champions, an annual award marking exceptional work by council staff.
Christina McAnea will address the national conference on Wednesday and Rosena Allin-Khan will be speaking on Friday. John Barnes and Angela Rayner will be taking part in fringe events on the Tuesday and Wednesday.
Issues to be discussed include the future of social care, the erosion of employment rights, school funding, water company sewage discharges and rocketing living costs. The conference also sees the launch of UNISON’s report into energy efficiency, as well as stories about police staff cuts and the travel time penalty for care workers.
