UNISON member wins prestigious teaching assistant award

UNISON member Kathy Harwood has been named Teaching Assistant of the Year for her dedication to helping children with a variety of health problems

UNISON member Kathy Harwood has been named Teaching Assistant of the Year 2015 at the prestigious Pearson Teaching Awards ceremony.

Ms Harwood, who works at the Hospital and Home Education Learning Centre in Nottingham, is a higher level teaching assistant and gifted education professional who has worked at the QMC Hospital School in Nottingham since 1995.

The citation said that, “through her outstanding professionalism and great personal charm, she has become a much-loved and respected member of both of the school and the wider hospital communities.

“She works with children facing a variety of health issues, some of whom are extremely ill. Every day, she greets them with a positive and creative approach, knowing exactly how to make each young person engage in school activities whilst bringing a smile to their faces; her great skills making a real difference in greatly challenging circumstances.”

Ms Harwood received her award from Great British Bake-Off winner Nadiya Hussein.
