UNISON joined Redcar racecourse recently to get the message out about the importance of registering to vote before the 20 April deadline.

Women dressed as suffragettes and women through the ages, to highlight the importance of registering and voting.

A new system of voter registration was introduced in 2014 to prevent voter fraud. The way that this has been implemented could mean that millions of people will be excluded from voting with young people, people living in privately rented accommodation and BMAE communities particularly affected.

Failure to register could affect your credit rating and you could experience problems getting loans, mortgages, finance agreements, and mobile phone contracts.

UNISON Regional Convenor Clare Williams said: “UNISON is delighted to be working with Redcar Racecourse to be publicising the importance of voting and how to register.

“Not being registered has serious implications. In the general election in 2010 there were 9.2m women eligible to vote who didn’t do so. This election is one of the most crucial in decades.

“UNISON wants to encourage as many people as possible to participate in the democratic process, including young people and first time voters.”
