UNISON member wins nursing award

At the inaugural All Ireland chief nursing officers’ conference yesterday, UNISON member Marie-Therese McDermott, a ward sister in the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, received the first ever award for Excellence in Cross Border Nursing.

This award recognises innovation and excellence in patient care within the border region or on an all-island basis.

The conference, which was held in Dublin Castle, was jointly hosted by Dr Siobhan O’Halloran of the Irish department of health and Charlotte McArdle, chief nursing officer for Northern Ireland.

There was a huge audience, including ministers from the north and south, nurse managers, nurse practitioners and student nurses.

“Marie-Therese McDermott is a credit to the nursing profession.” said UNISON Northern Ireland head of bargaining Anne Speed, who attended the conference.

“This award is testament to the high level of care and commitment of UNISON nurses and their profession across the health service.

“All of UNISON is very proud of our member on receiving this prestigious award and we wish her all the very best.”
