UNISON responds to Welsh local government budget announcement

Local authorities have been told they will get £146m less from next April from the Welsh government. Each authority in Wales will experience a budget cut of between 2.4% and 4.5%.

In response to the local government budget announcement from Welsh government, UNISON Cumry/Wales secretary Margaret Thomas, said:

“I don’t think we can underestimate the impact these cuts will have on local government services. Every one of us across Wales will be affected by these cuts.

“It is going to be impossible to continue to keep pace with the growing demands on services under such dire finances.

“We can sit and argue about who’s at fault for these cuts, but that is not going to make a difference to local people when they try to access public services nor the already low paid local government workers who will be expected to do more, whilst faced with job losses.

“We have to campaign to protect local government services. The UK government need to put an end to their damaging austerity policies that are causing so much suffering and we need to continue the campaign to ensure fair funding for Wales.

“But it is not good enough for the Welsh government to simply lay the blame at the door of Westminster – they must campaign alongside us to ensure good quality public services that are sustainable for the future.”
