NHS England funding for charities ‘a drop in the ocean’

Commenting on the £2m from NHS England to go into helping the elderly avoid hospital this winter, Christina McAnea, UNISON head of health, said:
“The amount is a drop in the ocean considering the seriousness and extent of the issue. The elderly need help throughout the year not just during the winter months.
“The Government is not putting enough funding into the whole care system.  Many elderly people now rely on increasingly rationed and over-stretched home care visits.  Investing in homecare services would be a cost effective way of keeping the frail elderly out of hospital and provide the support they need when discharged from hospital.  Instead cuts have led to a massive increase in the number of 15-minute care slots, which mean that workers do not have enough time to care for all their clients’ needs.”
