Delegates discuss improving pay consultation process

UNISON’s local government conference debated a range of motions on the second morning of its conference in Brighton today, including looking at how to improve the consultation process on pay.

Glen Williams for the executive cited the “technological revolution in UNISON”, with huge swathes of new members joining online, “without ever having to use a Bic or a Biro”.

Delegates agreed that “technology is the future” and must be considered when the executive meets to discuss improving the current system of pay consultations.

Addressing a motion that had grown out of the Local Government Association’s campaign on ‘Rewiring Public Services’, Paula Black from the NJC committee said that “rewiring public services can only be realised if employees are valued”.

And Roger Bannister from Knowsley noted that it was clear that “the preservation, protection and extension of collective bargaining” was key to any ‘rewiring’ that the union would see as positive.

Delegates also agreed the importance of union learning reps, and the need to do more to recruit and encourage union reps.
