Speaking out for LGBT equality

UNISON is marking International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia tomorrow by highlighting the importance of .LGBT equality at work.

UNISON regions and branches are marking the day with information stalls, speakers and community events.

“This year’s theme – freedom of expression – is highly relevant in the workplace,” says UNISON national officer Carola Towle.

“If the dignity of LGBT people is denied at work, if they are forced to hide who they are or ridiculed for being themselves, we know the result. Not only does it prevent them working to their full ability, but over time it damages their health.

“Every year, ILGA-Europe publishes a Rainbow Index of the way legislation and policies affect LGBT people’s human rights,” she notes.

“The UK once again tops this index, but there is no room for complacency. Legal protections must be translated into true equality at work and in society.”

The international day started off in a small way, but has grown to include multiple events in more than 120 countries – even its familiar acronym and hashtag has grown from IDAHO to IDAHOBIT.

#IDAHOBIT2014 is supported by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, who has declared in a public message: “Human rights are for everyone, no matter who you are or whom you love.”

He reminds people: “equality starts with you.”
