Inflation figures little comfort for squeezed public service workers

Commenting on today’s inflation figures showing RPI at 2.5% and CPI at 1.6%, UNISON General Secretary Dave Prentis said:

“Today’s inflation figures will be of little comfort to millions of public service workers whose pay packets are being squeezed.

“Already this year the Government has told hundreds of thousands of health workers they will go without a pay rise, and food standard agency staff are being offered a paltry 0.75%. Local government workers, suffering from huge job cuts, are to get just 1% for the second year in a row after three years of pay freezes.

“While any small drop in inflation is welcome, the Government must seriously reconsider its damaging austerity policies.”
