UNISON welcomes LGPS transitional regulations

UNISON has welcomed the news that the transitional regulations for the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) England and Wales have now been signed.

The move came after pressure was applied on the government, including a letter from general secretary Dave Prentis, and MPs threatening to ask questions in Parliament over the delay.

It means that the protections agreed for those whose service started before 1 April are now law and the scheme can function again.

UNISON head of pensions Glyn Jenkins said: “The protections that we have been able to fine tune and, in some cases improve, in the LGPS technical group will be a major success and relief for our members.”

The union is checking regulations and will issue detailed guidance shortly.
