Tweet George during the day of protest: #wakeupGeorge

Tweet the Chancellor and let him know decent pay makes sense for workers and the economy

Help us by retweeting our tweet: https://twitter.com/LocalGovPay/status/430602201547825152

Or tweeting your own message to the Chancellor, @George_Osborne using the hashtag #WakeUpGeorge

Today, @LocalGovPay will be tweeting George Osborne at his twitter account: @George_Osborne to mark the day of protest against cuts to local government funding which are causing job losses, service cuts and the pay freeze.

We will be calling on him to wake up to the fact that decent pay for local government workers makes good economic sense with the following tweet:

#WakeupGeorge Decent pay – good for local government, our economy and the Treasury. @George_Osborne #LGprotest

We want members to tweet George about this too during their lunch hour or after work.

We will be tweeting George on the morning of 4 February – look out for our tweet.

Branches can:

  • retweet our tweet to George;
  • incorporate a mass tweet into planned stunts;
  • suggest it as a way for members who can’t make branch events to contribute with the hashtag: #wakeupGeorge.
  • If you’re tweeting or instagramming on the day, you can tag your posts with: #Lgprotest.

The social media protest is just one part of a day of local protests across the UK.

Branches have organised everything from tea and cupcakes to a soup kitchen

Nottingham branch will set up a soup kitchen outside County Hall, West Bridgeford, at lunchtime in a bid to draw attention to the impact of the pay freeze on staff wages.

“Families are struggling on wages that simply haven’t kept up with inflation,” says branch secretary Martin Sleath, “so we are certainly not experiencing an economic recovery as the government would like us to believe.”

In St Helens, a vintage double decker bus is on hand to encourage new members to sign up to join UNISON as well as draw attention to the local branch’s protests against the pay freeze.

Northumberland UNISON will be wearing red ribbons as part of a #wearinred campaign to highlight the plight of local government services, staff pay and job security.

Let us know what your branch is doing, via twitter or by emailing us at inFocus@unison.co.uk.

Finally don’t forget to share your photos on facebook.com/UnisoninLocalGovernment and on Twitter @LocalGovPay. If you are not on Facebook or twitter, email your photos to NJCPay2014@unison.co.uk and we will post them for you.
