Response to domestic violence only effective if right support in place

Commenting on NICE’s latest call for greater awareness about domestic violence and abuse UNISON says the right support needs to be in place.

UNISON Assistant General Secretary Karen Jennings said:

“Domestic violence by definition often happens behind closed doors and sadly remains an under-reported crime.

“We welcome the new guidance to raise awareness of the issue as well as improve the response to domestic abuse.

“But, the response will only be effective if the right support is in place. Government cuts to public services means many refuges have had to close or reduce their number of safe places.

“Also, employers have a duty of care to their employees. It is of great comfort for those experiencing domestic violence to know that their employer has a domestic abuse policy taking into account the fact they might need time away.”
