UNISON, the UKs largest union, today welcomed the recommendation from the Low Pay Commission for a 3% increase in the national minimum wage, calling it “a move in the right direction”.
Dave Prentis, General Secretary of UNISON went on to say:
“It is about time that the minimum wage received a significant boost. No doubt the rise will be welcomed by millions of low paid workers who are struggling day to day to make ends meet. It will also reduce in-work poverty and make workers less vulnerable to pay day loan sharks as well as easing the growing pressure on foodbanks.
“However, UNISON will continue its campaign for a Living Wage for all workers. At £6.50 an hour, the new minimum wage would still over a £1 less than the Living Wage needed to keep people out of poverty. It is also less than the Chancellor’s own stated support for a £7 an hour minimum wage rate. The Government should have the courage of its convictions and propose meeting that target.”
