UNISON responds to new plans for A&E wards

“The Government’s proposed shake up of accident and emergency services fails to address the fundamental problem facing the overwhelming majority – a basic lack of funding” said Christina McAnea, UNISON Head of Health, today.

The union broadly welcomed the direction of travel for A&E services and called for staff at all levels to be involved in any reconfiguration proposals, together with health unions.

Christina McAnea, went on to say:

“Staff are the key to tackling the problems currently dogging A&E services.  It is heartening to see that the review recognises the vital role played by paramedics and we need to see that recognition reflected in the training and support given to the service.

“The fact remains that without a realistic funding settlement for the emergency services the pressures on A&E will only get worse.”
