UNISON applauds new tax-raising powers for Wales

The Welsh government will be offered additional financial powers, including borrowing powers, and the some control over income tax, subject to a referendum.

UNISON submitted evidence to this effect to the Richard Commission in March 2003, arguing that the National Assembly should have the power to vary income tax rates within bands in order to raise its own revenue and make the structure more progressive.

In response to the announcement today, UNISON Cymru/Wales secretary Margaret Thomas said: ”This is good news for Wales and for Welsh public services.

“UNISON has long argued the case for the Welsh government to have additional tax-raising abilities.

“Through these powers, the Welsh government and the people living in Wales will be given better control over Wales’s destiny, which is absolutely right.

“Clearly these powers do not represent a silver-bullet for Wales and there are many other options that could be used alongside these powers, but we wholeheartedly welcome the news and look forward to seeing the outcomes.”
