Electricity price hike fuels heat or eat dilemma

The 8% rise in electricity prices announced today by energy giant SSE, will lead to “a long cold winter for many of its customers” warned Dave Prentis, General Secretary of UNISON.

Mr Prentis went on to say:

“The spiralling cost of energy across the UK is already bringing hardship to millions of homes and hitting pensioners, the unemployed and low paid workers badly.  With so many facing a wage freeze or squeeze and the cost of food rising a growing number of people face the dilemma of heat or eat.

“The weather has been fine to date but all that is set to change.  This is a crisis in the making and the Government needs to tackle fuel poverty head-on or we will see the number of deaths from cold rising over the winter.”
