The government has made a series of announcements on housing in the recent Spending Review, including £3.3bn over three years to continue the affordable homes programme. UNISON welcomes the proposals which go some way in making housing a national priority.
However, the £3.3bn to deliver 165,000 new homes from 2015/16 falls short of the target of 250,000 homes per annum – including 80,000 local authority and housing association homes – that is required, as argued for in the Housing Voice Report.
UNISON believes that substantial investment in housing is needed to solve the nation’s housing crisis, to kick-start the economy, stimulate growth and create much needed jobs and housing.
