Time to build the union

Some 380,000 jobs have been lost in local government alone in the past two years, senior national officer Mike Short told local government delegates as he moved the service group’s annual report section on recruiting and organising.

That alone makes it more important that the union steps up its work on recruitment and organising, with the worst of the cuts yet to come.

The coming year needs to see a targeted campaign, building on the successful national recruitment campaign earlier this year, to recruit new members and organise them in the union, he said.

“Recruitment has to be a priority for all of us, in every committee, in every branch, in every workplace,” he said.
